'They don't exist,' he said sharply, jolted by a memory of old movies. Whitaker protested with a gasp of astonishment. Weesee, when she used that word, Loup-garou, was right, at least in a sense. I'm ashamed, Harry, so ashamed.' She sobbed for a moment, then with difficulty regained her control.” I mean something of me went with him and the rest of me wanted to go with him. 'I was conscious of myself again, it was like I had been left hollow, worthless. He was drawing everything out of me - my job, that you were trying to trap him, even things about me, even personal things. 'And I felt I was going to faint, and I tried, I tried to break out of that stare of his, but I couldn't. Destroying me right there on the sidewalk. It was like some sort of spider sucking out all my juices. The lashes were thick and Harry I just can't say this right, but the eyes, they weren't repulsive. I could see the iris was dark brown, almost black, and the whites were bloodshot lines. God, they were anything but dead the way they are in his picture. But he hissed, and those awful red eyes, like red fire, coals. He smelled strange, I noticed that right away, not rotten like you and Roticella said, more complicated, like an apple that the wasps are flying around, musty, but autumny.

They are beautifully patterned and textured, thanks to Stickland’s slick watercolour/ink method of working wet in wet (which allows the colours to bleed into each other). When I read a book, I want this level of emotion. It was so beautiful and heartbreaking and so many other things. Not only to those receiving it, but to the ones who find it in themselves to forgive as well. I’m getting teary just thinking about it. The moment that Grace steps into Kenna’s apartment? Oh. One of my favorite things to write about is forgiveness (if you read my novel, Words We Never Say, you’d see all of the forgiveness themes). I am a huge fan of novels that deal with trauma and how you come back from it. The plot gave me everything and more that I want from a novel. Not to mention, Ledger comes just as far and is an amazingly kind and receptive person. She was a great character and the development that she went through is admirable. Seeing just how truly remorseful she was and how hard she worked was amazing. I thought Kenna would be hard and a completely different character than she was coming out of prison. So, coming into this novel, I did not expect what I got. Hoover really outdid herself with this one. I can tell you right now that Reminders of Him is currently number two on my Colleen Hoover list, coming in just behind It Ends with Us. I was in love with the characters, the plot, just everything. For A Room of One's Own is not only one of the key texts of feminism, it also makes easy reading (and was possibly written in the very beautiful room – in Virginia Woolf’s cottage in the country – seen on this page). Well, this has been so for ninety years, and if a Persephone reader knows a girl who has not read it, then they should remedy this error at once. Virginia Woolf herself, wondering what people would make of the book, assumed they would say (patronisingly) ‘Mrs Woolf is so accomplished a writer, that all she says makes easy reading… this very feminine logic… a book to be put in the hands of girls.’ But we also hope that many of them will want to own the Persephone edition and to reread it and that they will want to give it to someone who has not yet read it. It is true that many of our readers will already have read A Room of One's Own, indeed we hope that this is the case. We take such pleasure in our collection of Persephone books, as a group rather than a mere stream of disparate titles, that it had become increasingly absurd not to include one of the great documents of twentieth-century feminist history amongst them. His stories were recognized for their originality and versatility, and Doctorow was praised for his audacity and imagination. These, like many of his other works, placed fictional characters in recognizable historical contexts, with known historical figures, and often used different narrative styles. They included the award-winning novels Ragtime (1975), Billy Bathgate (1989), and The March (2005). He wrote twelve novels, three volumes of short fiction and a stage drama. Edgar Lawrence Doctorow (Janu– July 21, 2015) was an American novelist, editor, and professor, best known for his works of historical fiction. |
